I'm a lurker usually, but have a question or two that i think you knowledgable folks might be able to help me with....Please?!?! I have a 7 year old Dell Dimension computer. Sure would like to buy a new one, but this one is going to have to last me a bit longer. My computer is currently running Windows98SE. I have finally caved in and purchased a WindowsXP upgrade to install. I have several corrupted Windows files on this old computer, scars from old viruses, I think. Anyway, my question(s) is/are: Can I just install the XP upgrade over 98? Or do I need to re-install 98, to try to repair the corrupted files, then load XP? OR do I need to un-install 98, re-install 98, then install XP? My daughter forced my hand at an upgrade when she bought me a really cool MP3 player for my birthday, and I cannot even load the software for it until I get XP! Thanks for any help anyone can render! I have sure learned a lot from this tip board. Ruth

The minimum hardware requirements for Windows XP Home Edition are: Pentium 233-megahertz (MHz) processor or faster (300 MHz is recommended) At least 64 megabytes (MB) of RAM (128 MB is recommended) At least 1.5 gigabytes (GB) of available space on the hard disk CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive Video adapter and monitor with Super VGA (800 x 600)or higher resolution Right click on "My Computer" and select "Properties" for the processor speed and the RAM. As XP is an upgrade it needs to see the prior OS. It can be installed over the old system. Backup any files you might want later. This doesn't mean any programs. (You can't) Format would give you the cleanest install. If you do then make a boot disk (on a floppy) for the 98SE in case you need it. You might get by just showing the XP install your copy of 98SE. If that doesn't work then do the install of 98SE and then install XP. Good luck and let us know how it works out.

I have a Dell Dimension XPS T500 MHz Pentium III with 512 K cache, 128 MB SDRAM, 48 Max variable CD ROM, and have 2.99 GB hard drive space left. I haven't purchased it yet, but intend to get an external hard drive to back up my computer to, and will be removing all my music, photos, etc., and leaving them on that, to free up more space, although that hasn't been a problem up to now. Ruth

I hope you also checked that any of the extras you have such as a printer work with your upgrade. You might find that a new computer is cheaper than you think since you don't have to buy a new monitor, mouse, and keyboard. .
